A poor farmer lived in a small cottage with his five children.
Fakir bir çiftçi, beş çocuğuyla küçük bir kır evinde yaşıyordu.
His youngest daughter, Astrid, was the most beautiful girl in the village.
En küçük kızı Astrid, köydeki en güzel kızdı.
One cold winter night, they heard a loud knock at the door.
Soğuk bir kış gecesi, kapıda güçlü bir vuruş sesi duydular.
The farmer opened the door and saw a big white bear standing outside.
Çiftçi kapıyı açtı ve dışarıda duran büyük bir beyaz ayı gördü.
"Good evening," said the bear in a deep, warm voice.
"İyi akşamlar," dedi ayı derin ve sıcak bir sesle.
"Give me your youngest daughter, and I will give your family gold and happiness."
"Bana en küçük kızınızı verin, ben de ailenize altın ve mutluluk vereyim."
The farmer was scared, so he went inside and talked to Astrid.
Çiftçi korktu ve içeri girip Astrid ile konuştu.
Astrid was brave, so she said, "I will go with the bear, Father."
Astrid cesurdu ve "Ayı ile gideceğim, Babacığım," dedi.
The next morning, Astrid climbed onto the bear's back and they left the cottage.
Ertesi sabah Astrid ayının sırtına bindi ve kır evini terk ettiler.
They traveled through dark forests and over tall mountains for a long time.
Uzun süre karanlık ormanlardan geçip yüksek dağları aştılar.
When they arrived, Astrid saw a beautiful palace made of ice and gold.
Vardıklarında Astrid, buzdan ve altından yapılmış güzel bir saray gördü.
"This palace is bigger than anything I have ever seen!" she said.
"Bu saray şimdiye kadar gördüğüm her şeyden büyük!" dedi.
Astrid lived in the palace and the bear was kind to her every day.
Astrid sarayda yaşadı ve ayı her gün ona nazikçe davrandı.
But every night, someone came into her dark room and slept there.
Ama her gece biri karanlık odasına gelip orada uyudu.
She could not see who it was because the room was always dark.

Astrid began to feel lonely, so she asked the bear, "Can I visit my family?"

The bear said yes, but he gave her one important warning before she went.

"Never light a candle in your room at night," he said sadly.

Astrid visited her family and they were very happy to see her.

Her mother said, "Light a candle at night so you can see who is in your room."

When Astrid returned to the palace, she lit a candle in her dark room at midnight.

She saw a young prince sleeping there — he was more handsome than anyone she knew.

Three drops of candle wax fell on his shirt and he woke up suddenly.

The prince disappeared before she could answer, and the palace became dark and cold.

Astrid was standing alone in the snow and she began to cry.

She was sad, but she made a decision: "I will find the prince and free him."

Astrid walked for many days and asked the North Wind for help.

After a long and difficult journey, the wind carried Astrid to the troll's castle.

Inside the castle, the troll princess was sitting next to the prince.

Astrid kissed the prince gently, and the magic curse broke immediately.
